I’m sad to say I’m disappointed by this book。 I have followed Ryan Holiday on Youtube and his podcast for over a year now and I tend to enjoy most of his semntiments and he has sparked my interest in stoic philosophy。 At times I have found his writing to be written for not everyday groups of people like he always makes reference to professional athletes and senators…。which is interesting but over time it actually affects your reading experience。 The layout/content of this book surprised me。 It i I’m sad to say I’m disappointed by this book。 I have followed Ryan Holiday on Youtube and his podcast for over a year now and I tend to enjoy most of his semntiments and he has sparked my interest in stoic philosophy。 At times I have found his writing to be written for not everyday groups of people like he always makes reference to professional athletes and senators…。which is interesting but over time it actually affects your reading experience。 The layout/content of this book surprised me。 It is a bunch of stories from war heroes and heroes from the past and how they were brave…。。which to be honest after a while is overkill and unrelatable, and don’t get me wrong i take a lot from stories like this but why must bravery only be referenced in terms of the past, in terms of war…? I don’t think he wants his audience to be everyday people but for the most part it likely is。 I also didn’t feel it was talking enough about philosophy or the stoics…which is what I expected…fairly? Anyway I like Ryan Holidays other stuff enough that I will eventually given another one of his books a shot。 。。。more

Ryan Holiday gives with his book “Courage is Calling” an enduring reminder to believe in yourself and that anything in life is possible。 It helps you to fight inner doubts & fears and shows that it often needs just a little bit of courage to pursuit your dreams。 But not only that - also injustice, suppression or other problems in the world have to be fought with courage。 The book describes allots of characteristics of the term and uses historical examples of people that become heroic, just with Ryan Holiday gives with his book “Courage is Calling” an enduring reminder to believe in yourself and that anything in life is possible。 It helps you to fight inner doubts & fears and shows that it often needs just a little bit of courage to pursuit your dreams。 But not only that - also injustice, suppression or other problems in the world have to be fought with courage。 The book describes allots of characteristics of the term and uses historical examples of people that become heroic, just with a bit of courage。 If it is de Gaulle, Leonidas or Marcus Aurelius - “Courage is Calling” let you believe that you can become heroic yourself, just with a bit of courage。 。。。more

Loved every bit of this book。 Planning to gift it to friends and family。

Overall a good read, but not as good as his last two books。 Some chapters are very focused and clear, with good story-telling but others bounce around from one person/figure to another making it hard to follow。I guess for someone thinking to pick up this book I would say to keep in mind the chapters are mainly centered on ideas, not people; so expect each chapter to include many references, and later on repetitions as well。

This book is literally a collection of quotes and anecdotes about courage。 It feels quite disjointed and is not really inspirational at all。 Reading about various courageous people in history with very little context is not going to inspire you or make you have more courage。 Also, the audiobook is read by the author who is absolutely terrible at pronouncing many of the names。 Surely if you write a book about some people you should at least learn how to pronounce their names。 Hearing Petain prono This book is literally a collection of quotes and anecdotes about courage。 It feels quite disjointed and is not really inspirational at all。 Reading about various courageous people in history with very little context is not going to inspire you or make you have more courage。 Also, the audiobook is read by the author who is absolutely terrible at pronouncing many of the names。 Surely if you write a book about some people you should at least learn how to pronounce their names。 Hearing Petain pronounced like Pee-tain was so painful! 。。。more

Just like his previous books, this was a very easy, entertaining, and informative read。 I enjoyed the short and concise chapters。 Definitely worth the read。 I am certain that I will be re-reading parts of this book if not the whole thing。 Some of the historical character references are very informative。 The character references are tied to examples of courage that make you think and reflect on your own life。 I can't wait for the Discipline book of the series to come out。 I will definitely buy th Just like his previous books, this was a very easy, entertaining, and informative read。 I enjoyed the short and concise chapters。 Definitely worth the read。 I am certain that I will be re-reading parts of this book if not the whole thing。 Some of the historical character references are very informative。 The character references are tied to examples of courage that make you think and reflect on your own life。 I can't wait for the Discipline book of the series to come out。 I will definitely buy that book。 。。。more

Despite the boring repetition, I appreciated the examples the authors gave。 All and all, it was cranky at times but I left with a better mental image and approach to courage。

Lots of bite-sized inspiring stories。 I would classify this as a "break glass in case of emergency" book。 If you're ever feeling unsure of yourself or know there's a thing you *ought* to do, but are scared to do it, read this。 Courage is something we have to build up over time, but that feels like something best suited to longer, more nuanced explorations of the topic。 This is just-in-time, emergency dosing。 Lots of bite-sized inspiring stories。 I would classify this as a "break glass in case of emergency" book。 If you're ever feeling unsure of yourself or know there's a thing you *ought* to do, but are scared to do it, read this。 Courage is something we have to build up over time, but that feels like something best suited to longer, more nuanced explorations of the topic。 This is just-in-time, emergency dosing。 。。。more

I love it when a book comes to you at just the right moment in your life。 Honestly with this one there probably isn’t a bad time for it to come into your life because all of us could benefit from a boost of courage。 Great stories and examples of people doing the right thing even when it cost them dearly。

Ryan Holiday is one of my earliest professional influences, but I hate to say I really haven't enjoyed his last few books on the stoic virtues。 The best of them was "Stillness is the Key," but the others (including and especially this one) felt like a loosely organized and morally virtuous sermon。 At points, I felt inspired。 But mostly, I just felt bored and had to work my way through a ton of trite quotes from our stoic ancestors。 Maybe read the audiobook for a quick hit of inspiration, but thi Ryan Holiday is one of my earliest professional influences, but I hate to say I really haven't enjoyed his last few books on the stoic virtues。 The best of them was "Stillness is the Key," but the others (including and especially this one) felt like a loosely organized and morally virtuous sermon。 At points, I felt inspired。 But mostly, I just felt bored and had to work my way through a ton of trite quotes from our stoic ancestors。 Maybe read the audiobook for a quick hit of inspiration, but this book is anything but life changing。 。。。more

I like the thought behind this book and I like to be inspired by others' decisions。 There were some great stories in this book and the message was great。 I'm grateful for those who have stood up for truth, justice and righteousness。 I found it a little redundant and insignificant at times。One of my favorite excerpts: “People would rather be complicit in a crime than speak up。 People would rather die in a pandemic than be the only one in a mask。 People would rather stay in a job they hate than ex I like the thought behind this book and I like to be inspired by others' decisions。 There were some great stories in this book and the message was great。 I'm grateful for those who have stood up for truth, justice and righteousness。 I found it a little redundant and insignificant at times。One of my favorite excerpts: “People would rather be complicit in a crime than speak up。 People would rather die in a pandemic than be the only one in a mask。 People would rather stay in a job they hate than explain whey they quit to do something less certain。 They’d rather follow a silly trend than dare question it; losing their life savings to a burst bubble is somehow less painful than seeming stupid for sitting on the sidelines while the bubble grew。 They’d rather go along with something that will tarnish their legacy than raise their voice ever so slightly and risk standing alone or apart for even ten minutes。”Cicero “Let other people worry over what they will say about you,” he said。 “They will say it in any case。”“You can’t let fear rule。 Because there has never been a person who did something that mattered without pissing people off。 There has never been a change that was not met with doubts。 There has never been a movement that was not mocked。 There was never a groundbreaking business that wasn’t loudly predicted to fail。“And there has never, ever been a time when the average opinion of faceless, unaccountable strangers should be valued above our own considered judgement。”AND“What if everyone put their own interests above everything else? Far more politically motivated than he’s other books。 His older books were much more focused on facts and details of the past。 Check those out!

This was a stoic special。 It has taken a while to read, often in-between other books that I have picked up。 This book is a good reminder to keep up the courage needed to finish goals, such as even reading this book。 The author does a good job in extolling the stoic virtue of courage。 I need to find more courage in my life, take my stands on my principles and keep moving forward。

Make courage a habit。 Amazing book to get started towards the path of being courageous。

This is the third book I read by Ryan Holiday and frankly the least insightful。 It’s simply an accumulation of chapters on the acts of courage performed by various historical figures and while it’s interesting, there is no concept or big idea that stays on your mind after you’ve finished reading it。 It’s also contradictory at times which I suppose is meant to emphasize the necessity to be neither reckless nor a coward, but it can leave you confused at times。 I found the chapters too short and th This is the third book I read by Ryan Holiday and frankly the least insightful。 It’s simply an accumulation of chapters on the acts of courage performed by various historical figures and while it’s interesting, there is no concept or big idea that stays on your mind after you’ve finished reading it。 It’s also contradictory at times which I suppose is meant to emphasize the necessity to be neither reckless nor a coward, but it can leave you confused at times。 I found the chapters too short and think that they would’ve worked better as part of a newsletter as they don’t really relate to one another except for the main theme。 Historically speaking it’s still a good book to read if you want to learn more about heroic figures, but again Holiday places too much focus on the American Civil War, something that is present in so many other self help books that it gets tiring。 。。。more

Good snippets of stories, examples to explain current idea。 Hard for the quick and short chapters to tie together and understand the main underlying theme。

More of a book-long preaching, where some statements are more inspiring than the others, but altogether not my cup of tea。 I prefer rational explanation or at least some smart observations, which this book does not really provide。

This book is like a mish-mash of Malcolm Gladwell and Oprah - hyped-up stories of great people and inspirational platitudes。 In summation: Go and do the thing。

While this book has good foundations, it could have been a five page essay。 Holiday spends the majority of the book making grandiose statements repeating the same principle in an attempt to be quotable。 Overall, a short and easy read, in part because of its (slightly egotistical) repetition。

It is hard to fault a book that quotes John Wooden, which this book does。 Courage is Calling is all about taking the leap。 And not just to become a nurse like the lady with the light, but to risk almost certain death for a cause in some extreme examples。 3。5 ⭐️s。
